Groups of newly-hatched chiggers lurk near the tops of plants in berry brambles or in areas overgrown with tall grass, weeds, or shrubby plants.
There they wait quietly until they are alerted to the approach of a person or some other vertebrate by a waft of carbon dioxide that emanates from its body.
If the animal comes close enough, they climb on board.
