Stay out of the weedy areas in which they are found, but if you must enter such places, you can keep most of them off your body by tucking your pants into your socks and spraying your ankles, belt line, and fly with a repellent.
If you do get some bites, try not to scratch them. They go away faster if you leave them alone.
There are many reputed remedies for chigger bites, but the only one that works for me is to apply Lanacane or some other over the counter cream that contains a contact anesthetic such as benzocaine.
This relieves the itching and curtails the urge to scratch.
