Why Does a Male Scorpion Sting His Intended Mate During the Courtship?

A male scorpion stings his intended mate during the courtship, usually several times.

The male penetrates a membranous area of the female’s body with his sting and may leave it embedded there for several minutes.

It is not known whether or not the male actually injects venom into the female.

The effect of the mating sting on the female is not known, but it is tempting to think that it functions like a love bite.
